Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy

A love triangle made up of two young women and the man they both covet, an attempted literary seduction that takes an unexpected turn, and a chance meeting due to mistaken identity . . . After Asako I and II (2015), the Japanese director once again tackles the torments of the heart and soul in a tale told in three distinct chapters and heavily inspired by the films of Éric Rohmer. Thoroughly modern, blunt-speaking female characters take the upper hand in these playful, sophisticated tales-within-a-tale. Cut-glass dialogue, misleading appearances, coincidences and misunderstandings delicately expose the dynamics and ambivalence of human relations. (Text written for Festival du nouveau cinéma)
