Aya left Japan to study medicine in Paris. She’s haunted by the painful memory of her best friend Miki, killed in a crush some years previously. When she meets a young Frenchman, the trauma of the past surges back… La Japonaise, a screenplay written by celebrated novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet in 1961, was never actually made into a movie. Now, director Céline Ters has teamed up with Radio France’s Atelier de création radiophonique to present the original text as a ‘phantom’ film — a film without images, carried solely by 3D sound.
