Mani, a law student, leaves the city for the northern Quebec reserve where she grew up. Seeking a referendum to end the prohibition of alcohol on the reserve, she’s soon caught between the community’s two opposing factions. Part social drama, part humanist fable, this feature debut from contemporary artist Caroline Monnet follows a young Indigenous woman as she renews family ties and confronts a world both familiar and foreign. Powerful and poetic, shot in a magnificent boreal setting, Bootlegger is a vibrant tribute to a passionate people and their fierce battle for self-determination.
